Nothing To See Here by Kevin Wilson

Paige and I both got this one from my aunt (her mom) for Christmas. Upon reading the back, the premise sounded delightfully silly—a story revolving around two children who burst into flames when experiencing deep emotion; usually discomfort or anger.

Upon reading the book, it was so much more than “silly.” It’s about the complicated nature of female friendship; it’s about responsibility, empathy, how to properly take care of the people you grow to love. And there is a huge emotional payoff, which snuck up on me after being surrounded by fantastical characters and quippy little passages. The sneaking up part made it even better in the end.

It’s difficult to find new originality in a space that is now made from recycled ideas frankensteined together and literary formulas meant to be followed, but Kevin Wilson did it here—I’ve never read anything like this. I found it to be nothing short of thirst-quenching; ironic considering the subject matter.

It’s a super quick, fun, hilarious read, and then suddenly your heart has burst into flames.
